Ayubowan & Welcome to Colombo, Sri Lanka

The history of Colombo dates back to when Arab traders first settled here in the 8th century. In the 17th century the Dutch built a fort here, which caused the city to garner the attention of subsequent rulers. A period of rapid urbanisation has removed much of the early architecture, although some early buildings still remain in the Fort area.

Colombo is Sri Lanka's main city, a happening and intriguing place with much to offer tourists!

Colombo

Whilst Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, located 10 km away, is the official administrative capital, it is Colombo that is capital in everything but name. Sri Lanka's largest city, it is the main commercial, financial and industrial centre of the country. And while much of the country is laid-back, with a slower pace of life, Colombo is every bit the big city - noisy, bustling and hectic. It is also a city of contrasts, with modern skyscrapers towering over the ubiquitous three-wheeled taxis, businesmen in suits sharing sidewalk space with shop vendors, and Buddhist monks serenely wandering through the busy streets. Colombo is the best place in Sri Lanka for shopping, and also offers the island's best dining and nightlife options. It also contains a number of museums, historical sites and religious buildings, befitting a country with as much history as Sri Lanka has.

Central Hills

The Central Hills region of Sri Lanka is one of the main areas for tourists to visit. Its regional capital is Kandy, a city synonymous with arts and crafts. It is also widely considered the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, it is famous for the numerous temples located in the surrounding hills, including the Temple of the Tooth. Kandy itself is a bustling market town that offers many things to see and do for visitors, from traditional dances to adventure activities. It is also a good transit point for visiting regions further north, such as the cultural triangle.

Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle region of Sri Lanka includes a number of National Parks, an array of monasteries, temples and Buddha statues located in various historical sites, and the city of Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's medieval capital, and contains a number of well-preserved articles of interest, including some awe-inspiring statues. This is another of the main tourist regions within Sri Lanka, and it's not hard to see why.
