The Rafters Retreat
Sustainability
Channa Perera, an Engineer by training, has converted the grounds of his beautiful ancestral family home in to an experience for nature lovers. Warm and friendly, Channa spent all of his school holidays in the environs of Kitulgala. He loves the village, and is loved by the villagers in turn who have known and worked for the family for generations. Channa continues the family tradition and employs villagers to run Rafter's Retreat.
Begun in 1998 with six cabanas, Channa has expanded to 11 to accommodate those who seek Rafter's Retreat to unwind from the travails and stress of city life and be with nature and recuperate.
Caring for destination
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Environmental protection and education
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The hotel management puts a lot of emphasis on securing a clean environment by following effective recycling practices. Usage of Polythene is strictly prohibited throughout the hotel and recycling is a key factor when it comes to waste disposal.
Awareness educational programs take place within the region under the direct supervision of the hotel management. These programs have become very effective now that regional villagers are becoming more aware of the consequences of environmental sustainability.
